Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the internship, the student will have discovered a professional environment and specific techniques unique to the visited company or research center.  They will have carried out substantial work that utilizes both their theoretical knowledge and practical skills.

This course contributes to the learning outcomes II.1, II.2, II.3, III.1, III.2, III.3, III.4, VI.1, VI.2, VI.4, VII.1, VII.2, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5, VII.6 of the MSc in electrical engineering.

- MyULiège

Written work / report

Out-of-session test(s)

Further information:

In the three weeks following the end of the internship and at least one week before the oral presentation, the student sends a written report (about 30 pages, describing the context of the work, the company, the problem to be solved, the methodology, the tasks that were carried out and the results) to his industrial and academic supervisors, as well as to the jury members and to the internship coordinator (Prof. Redouté).

The oral defense begins with a 10-minute presentation by the student (strict timing), followed by approximately 10 minutes of questions from the supervisors and jury members.

The final grade will take into account the quantity and quality of the work, the quality of the written report, the oral presentation and the answers given during the defense, as well as the overall assessment of the internship by the industry supervisor.

Work placement(s)

40 working days.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course

Important

The internship should be carried out at a company or a research center.  The student's workplace should be in Belgium.

It is not easy to find a 40-day internship in a company.  Make sure to have been accepted for an internship before adding this internship to your course program (PAE).

It is strictly prohibited to start and undertake an internship unless it is included in your course program (PAE).

It is strictly prohibited to start the internship as long as the internship agreement and the risk analysis forms have not been processed and signed by all parties.

The internship committee

The internship committee consists of:

  • The academic supervisor (i.e. le promoteur académique): he/ she is contacted by the student, and validates the scientific and/or technical contents of the internship and assumes the academic supervision;
  • The industrial supervisor (i.e. le promoteur industriel): he/she provides supervision at the host institution.
  • Two (or more) professors or staff members working at the University of Liège.
The student must propose the composition of the internship committee to the internship coordinator (Prof. Redouté) and the president of the study council (Prof. Vanderbemden) before the start of the internship.

Internship topics

A non-exhaustive list of internship topics as well as other important information of the Faculty of Engineering can be found on the following webpage: https://my.fsa-student.uliege.be/cms/c_4316601/fr/myfsastudent-stagesr/facsa-stages.

A student may also propose an internship that is not on the aforementioned webpage: however, it must be approved by the academic supervisor.

The webpage https://www.montefiore.uliege.be/cms/c_3747743/en/montefiore-internship-master-thesis lists companies that regularly propose internships in the field of electrical engineering and computer science.

Enrollment

It is imperative that students are properly enrolled at the university before undertaking an internship.  For students who are doing their internship during the summer break (between the first and second year of their Master's program) and have passed their first year of the Master's program in June, it is necessary to re-enroll before the start of the internship.

Administrative steps

  • The student submits a proposal for the members constituing the internship committee to the internship coordinator (Prof. Redouté) and to the president of the study council (Prof. Vanderbemden) before the start of the internship.
  • Before the internship begins, the student sends the completed internship agreement and the risk analysis form to the internship coordinator.  These documents can be downloaded from the corresponding webpage of the ULiège legal department, the link to which you will find on this page: https://my.fsa-student.uliege.be/cms/c_4316601/fr/myfsastudent-stages.  If the company does not agree to use the ULiège standard internship agreement, this agreement must be reviewed and approved by the ULiège legal department.  It is strictly prohibited to begin the internship until the internship agreement and the risk analysis forms have been processed and signed by all parties.
  • In the three weeks following the end of the internship and at least one week before the oral presentation, the student sends his/her written report to each member of the internship committee, as well as to the internship coordinator.  The student also sends the corresponding assessment form to the industrial supervisor (the link to this form can be found on this website: https://my.fsa-student.uliege.be/cms/c_4316601/fr/myfsastudent-stages), who sends it back to the internship coordinator.
  • Once the report is handed in, the student contacts the committee members and the internship coordinator to find a date suitable for the defense.  The defense can occur during or outside the standard examination periods, depending on the constraints of the intership committee members.  The internship coordinator acts as a moderator during the defense.
