Learning unit contents
The workshop mobilizes on site experimentation, as a modality of Action-Research, and the economy of means as a postulate. It aims to acquire learning through the design and realization, in groups and at a scale of 1/1, of projects or prototypes, responding to requests from identified clients.
The architectural project is not limited to the act of designing, it is rooted in the order, from a formulated desire which, following the work of translation of the architect, becomes material reality through the building site. In this workshop, students will be led to reflect on the relationships between these three phases and the challenges of their articulation in the perspective of an architecture that is more conscious of its effects on society and the environment.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The project process, conducted in groups, allows each student to:
- Question material resources and their potential as a design incentive in a local and circular approach;
- Explore, through "do it yourself", "do it with" and "make it done", the issues of co-construction of intentions and their translation, from the thought project to the built project (cost, quality of implementation, reception by the user, wear and tear...);
- To explore, thanks to the production of 1/1 artifacts, other modalities of project making by integrating other actors (clients, users, engineers, manufacturers...);
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Project work takes place in workshops and/or at project sites.
Each project group operates almost autonomously, like a small agency.
The supervised sessions alternate :
- Methodological input from the teachers
- Presentations and critical reviews by peers (within and between groups)
- Support meetings on technical, relational or logistical issues
- Meetings and interactions with partners (users, sponsors, craftsmen...)
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Course materials and recommended or required readings
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
oral exam
Written work / report
Continuous assessment
Other : Prototype 1/1
Further information:
Insofar as the result produced is collective but remains the fruit of each person's involvement, the evaluation will be both collective and individual.
The collective evaluation will be done through the project produced and will focus on :
- The capacity of the project to meet the expectations of the partners and the users;
- The ability of the project to integrate the resource as a design driver;
- The quality of the graphic documents accompanying the material production;
- The quality of the collaborative process of co-design (group notebook).
- Involvement in the group work;
- The ability to take on a role, a task, and make it benefit the group;
- The ability to develop a critical and committed posture with regard to the theme of the workshop.
