Learning unit contents
This course aims to introduce the methodological and epistemological developments in the anthropology of gender since the mid-20th century. Particular attention will be paid to masculinities in various geographic areas and in a diversity of domains: popular music, family, sexual, man-animal and political relations. At the same time, it is about questioning our own socio-cultural universe of reference and critically understanding the positions that the anthropologist is led to assume in the field. The approach will be both theoretical and practical and will include:
- Analysis of certain key works in anthropological literature and gender studies and sexuality and their impact on the discipline;
- A dual focus on the ethnography of masculinities and feminist anthropology;
- The use of the photographic tool as an instrument for analysis and production of ethnographic materials.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course aims to provide students with examples of ethnographic analyzes as well as the theoretical evolution of the gender question in anthropology. These perspectives should allow us to question our own contemporary worlds of reference. Familiarization with photographic practice in ethnography.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
A good command of the history of Anglo-Saxon and French anthropologies, as well as a good command of written English (needed to read texts in English).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will include eight lessons divided into the presentation of ethnographic cases and history of gender anthropology, and two sessions of debate and sharing of ethnographic material produced by the students. Students will devote eight hours to photographic field work.

Student evaluation is based on the following modalities:
- Participation in activities;
- Three short assignments during the year: a report on a chosen article, two series of 5 to 7 photographs
- Final exam: Reflective work on the impact of the themes covered in the course. Discussions with the teacher.
