MODULE 3: Supervised Practice in Remedial Education and Clinical Psychology

This module approaches the supervised practice relationship from two perspectives. The first concerns the process or "how" of supervised practice, i.e., the steps to be followed in the unfolding of one or more individual supervision sessions (e.g., presentation of the problem, investigation of the problem, sharing of information, goals to be pursued in the clinical work, etc.). The second concerns the content or "what" of supervised practice, i.e., exploring with the remedial teacher or clinical psychologist the full range of facets of working with his or her patients based on Hawkins and Shohet's (2012) model of the 7 modes of individual supervision: the patient, the supervisee's strategies and actions, The relationship between the patient and the remedial teacher/clinical psychologist, the supervisee, the supervisory relationship, the supervisor, and the context.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

  • Identify the clinical work done with the patient by the remedial teacher/clinical psychologist, evaluate it and shed light on errors or blind spots.
  • To test, with the supervisee, the modes of supervision in the form of role-playing in order to transfer what has been learned in the session with the patient/client and to bring out new avenues for intervention.
  • To define, with the supervisee, a plan of concrete clinical actions to be carried out with the patient in the future.
