Learning unit contents

This course is a continuation of the Theory and Practice of Translation from Spanish into French I. As in that class, the emphasis is on:

- the diversity of source texts (the press, but also the audiovisual world, documents from companies or private and public bodies, texts used by international institutions in recruitment competitions for translators, etc.);

- the different registers and styles specific to these frameworks, their identification and adaptation into French;

- the formulation of questions in translation studies based on the difficulties encountered in the texts studied and familiarisation with the relevant scientific literature.

As far as the theoretical part of the course is concerned, the main thrust of the work is aimed at enabling students to become more autonomous in their translation choices and in their search for scientific resources likely to shed light on them.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

By the end of this teaching unit, students will have made progress in the following areas:

- understanding of the source language based on a diversification of the types of documents translated;

- identification of the style, register and different Spanish language variants presented by these documents;

- analysis and resolution of the translation difficulties related to these variants;

- use of the scientific resources most likely to be able to help, adopting an independent approach to documentation relating to various aspects of their work;

- analysis and evaluation of these resources.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Very good proficiency in Spanish and perfect mastery of French

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The teaching method is based on three areas of work:

- preparation of a translation by each student at home, then shared and discussed in class

- translation workshops around a document which has not been prepared in advance. The class will be divided into groups working together on these documents. The aim of this method is to bring to light any questions or differences arising from these discussions and to support each student's work as it progresses

- scientific research: locating and evaluating scientific works related to the issues raised by the sources translated in the above-mentioned activities; ongoing reading of articles or book chapters, or attending conferences on translation-related subjects.
