Learning unit contents
Contemporary issues in health, care and the management of related issues include the confrontation with increasingly diverse publics - in cultural terms crossed with social factors, age, gender, origin, status, among others - due not only to migratory movements, but also to a wider process of making visible and recognising the heterogeneity of individual and collective positions and belonging. This heterogeneity multiplies the meanings associated by the population with health issues and the possible practices, which implies, for health professionals in particular, the need to equip themselves with useful tools to identify this complex diversification and to respond appropriately to the questions it raises. To this end, this course will be articulated around the following pedagogical objectives:
- To situate and deconstruct one's knowledge, trained within the framework of modern and contemporary Western biomedicine; to relativize the scientific and professional posture that derives from it.
- To recognise the existence of different ways of understanding the health/disease binomial (and the body itself), as well as relating to care practices; to identify and analyse them.
- To study concrete examples and empirical materials from various projects and research, and to develop potential intervention projects that promote intercultural understanding and access to appropriate care practices.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course aims to develop with students the theoretical and methodological tools to understand health issues as complex questions in which socio-cultural and other issues are crucial. The overall objective is to raise students' awareness of socio-cultural diversity and equip them to deal with it appropriately in their future professional practice.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Prior knowledge of certain socio-anthropological concepts is an advantage but not essential, given the introductory nature of this course and the specific topic covered. A knowledge of written English is necessary for the reading of English texts. The bibliography will nevertheless be adapted according to the students' language skills.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course will consist of five 3-hour classroom lessons. The practical work expected from the student (5h) will be organised in groups, according to the themes and methodologies discussed in class.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Additional information:
Face-to-face; compulsory readings and active participation in class; practical activity. Students who are unable to attend the course, especially for work reasons, are requested to contact the teacher. If the number of students enrolled is less than 10, the course can be organised differently.
Recommended or required readings
Readings will be indicated during the course and available via MyULiège. Some of these readings are compulsory and necessary for class discussions.
Exam(s) in session
Any session

Additional information:
In addition to ensuring their presence and active participation in class (5 points), each student will produce a written work (15 points) including a restitution of the theoretical and methodological elements presented in class, as an introduction, and the analysis of the materials produced during the practical work, deepening the themes that emerge through a subsequent bibliographical research.
