Learning unit contents
Raw material : powder production and characterisation Additive manufacturing processes : principles and consolidation mechanisms, critical parameters, post-treatments, relations between processing parameters, internal structure (porosities, microstructures...) and parts properties.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
- Explain the physical and physico-chemical phenomena underlying the consolidation of a part produced by additive manufacturing.
- Describe the relations between the processing and/or post-processing parameters, the structure of a part (porosity, microstructures...) and its usage properties.
- Describe and class the main additive manufacturing processes. Make an informed choice between these processes.
- Establish the state-of-the-art concerning a specific issue in relation with additive manufacturing, based on technical and scientific documentations. Give a clear and critical oral presentation.
This course contributes to the learning outcomes I.1, I.2, II.1, II.2, II.3, IV.5, IV.9, VI.1, VII.1, VII.3, VII.4, VII.5 of the MSc in mechanical engineering.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Some basic knowledge in Materials Science is desirable: Structures and properties of metallic materials and polymers...
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course consists in ex-cathedra lectures, one practical workshop, and a personal project (bibliography survey).
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Teaching will take place face-to-face, for as much as the sanitary situation allows. If necessary, some learning activities may take place remotely.
Recommended or required readings
Powerpoint presentations and publications from scientific literature will be made available for the students via eCampus.

Additional information:
The final mark will be computed as follows: 40% based on a presentation of the personal project during the semester, 10% based on a report on the pratical workshop, and 50% based on an oral exam on the course materials.
