Learning unit contents
We will explore the role of medieval Latin literature in the formation and diffusion of Romance literatures (c. 1100-1350), through the discussion of texts arising from cultural and linguistic contact. Special attention will be paid to the Latin texts that form the base for European literary traditions and/or are in dialogue with these, as well as to Latin texts that deal with Romance literatures and literary language.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The student will be able to read and understand texts in medieval Latin, and know how to situate it with respect to other Romance literatures. Awareness and basic knowledge of the scope of cultural and linguistic contact in Europe between the Latin texts analysed and the vernacular traditions in Romance languages, as well as its history and geography.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic knowledge of classical Latin and of the classics of Latin literature.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Basic notions of Latin literature of the Middle Ages. In-depth reading of one text, and comparison with other texts in Latin and in Romance language. Use of reference dictionaries and online resources.

Oral exam. Discussion of course contents, reading and translation of one of the excerpts read and commented during the course (50%), presentation of a group project (teams of 4-5 students) on a subject agreed on with the instructor (50%).
