Learning unit contents
"The Love Poetry of John Donne"
The course will provide an introduction to metaphysical poetry as well as to the life and work of the late Renaissance English poet John Donne (1572-1631). A special focus will be placed on his secular work and on the mercurial persona alive in his love poems.
A selection of poems will be recommended and made available through e-Campus.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
1. Enhance the students' capacity for textual analysis and interpretation.
2. Develop their familiarity with a particular aspect of the Renaissance in England.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Nothing of the sort, but it will of course help to have, or wish to develop, a sense of form or an interest in literary history or in love poetry in English.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Heuristic seminars, organised on a weekly basis and relying on closed readings of selected (sometimes outrageous) texts.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The course will be organized in the first term. The seminars will be held on Mondays (9-11am) in room "Philo 2" (building A1).
The first meeting will be held on Monday 25 September 2023, starting at 9am.
