Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
General considerations about structures and their history, reflexions about natural phenomenon. Discussions about existing structures. General approach to solve a problem of Strength of materials. Mechanical properties of materials. Actions on structures. Force and moment. Equilibrium. Modelization of supports. Internal forces M, N and V. Degree of redundancy. Calculation of trusses. Internal forces and force diagrams. Geometrical characteristics of the sections. Stresses in the elements subjected to normal force (N), bending (M). Design of the elements of structures. Shear stresses due to shear forces (only for part Approfondissement). Buckling. Deformations and displacements.
Only for the part Approfondissement:
Biaxial bending (Mx, My) and composed bending (N, Mx, My). The circle of Mohr.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course describes the basics of the strength of materials and elasticity.
After completing the course the student is expected to :
- Easily deal with the basic aspects of the Mechanics of Structures and the Strength of Materials (all materials)
- Understand the spread of forces, stresses and displacements inside structures
- Design and calculate elementary structures
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Mathématique générale, first Part
Mathématique générale, second Part
Physique générale
Mécanique
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
All the forecast hours are hold by the professor himself in auditorium. Generally, each course takes place as following:
- Short remind of the previous courses
- Theory with the help of a Powerpoint slide show + explanations on the blackboard
- 10 minutes break
- Exercises solved and commented on the blackboard by the professor and discussed with the students
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
