Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
- Hydraulic equipment (pumps, flow measurement, ...)
- Basic principles of open-channel flow
- Uniform flow
- Gradually varied flow
- Hydraulic jump
- CFD introduction
- Application to irrigation infrastructure
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
To teach the principles governing open channel flow
After following this course, students should be able to
- Compute the volume flow rate delivered by a channel as a function of its water depth.
- Identify and design modifications necessary to improve the fluid transport capacity of a channel.
- Calculate the evolution of water depth over the whole length of a channel.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
- General mathematics (1st and 2nd part)
- General physics
- Mechanics
- Applied fluid mechanics
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures: 15h Exercises: 6h
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face to face
Recommended or required readings
- Applied fluid mechanics (7e) (2014) Mott & Untener - Pearson [Chapter 6-15]
- Open channel hydraulics (2009) Chow - The Blackburn Press [Chapter 1-12]
- The course slides will be available on eCampus.
Oral + written exam (20+50%)
Personal report (30%)
The exam will be written, but during the exam, an oral test will be done in which the student will elaborate on a question concerning basic concepts learned during the course.
The quality of the english of the oral response will count for the evaluation in the framework of the course LANG2957-1 "Pratique de l'anglais de spécialité en Sciences et Technologies de l'environnement : partie 2".
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
- Presence during exercises is obligatory.
- This is a hybrid course, which means that your English skills should be trained during the course. All course material (slides, reference books, exercices) will be in English. Please interact as much as possible during the course, so that you can train your active, oral skills for the exam.
