Organisation and examination
Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course is composed of
- theoretical sessions to discover the geophysical techniques
- workshops to work on the project with the supervisors
- field days to take the necessary measurements to solve the problem
Coached by the supervisors, students will analyze a big project in which hydrogeophysical techniques need to be deployed while working as a team in a consultancy company: problem analysis, establishment of a methodology, choice of techniques, prices, deadlines, ...
The different project phases will be studied in a critical way. In this integrated project, a large range of competences and knowledge from different fields of the bio-engineering sciences will be put into practice (prospection, environmental technology, hydrology, soil physics and soil chemistry, metrology, financial evaluation).
! The course is organized every two years (Q1 2021 - Q1 2023 ...)
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, the student will be able to
Specific skills:
- understand the basics of different electromagnetic geophysical measurements and know when and where they can be applied;
- design a feasability study of a hydrogeophysical project based on real data;
- perform a field survey with geophysical methods;
- interpret the results of a geophysical survey and to confront them with other data;
- understand the different phases linked to the feasability study of a project.
- work in a team of engineers;
- apply and integrate the different engineering disciplines by teamwork;
- show a critical view.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
The course will touch upon soil physics, soil-plant interactions, hydrology, geophysics and project management. A good basis in mathematics, physics and chemistry is necessary.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
This course is composed of
- an introductory session on the project (feasibility study);
- theoretical courses
- 2 days of supervised field work;
- workshops for project construction
- oral presentation of the project to the 'client'.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Courses + coaching (sessions + online)
Recommended or required readings
Each student group will need to deliver a report, written in English.
Each group will do a project presentation after the delivery of the report, also in English.
The evaluation of the course will be based on an average between the written report and the presentation.
Work placement(s)
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
