Learning unit contents
The course is made of 5 chapters:
- What is spatial planning?
- Spatial planning and the related disciplines
- Spatial planning and environment
- The context of spatial planning in Wallonia
- The spatial planning devices in Wallonia
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The aim of this course is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge of spatial planning systems and practices from a sustainable development perspective.
This knowledge aims to
- enable students to understand the issues and political debates relating to spatial planning and mobility, particularly in the context of the social and environmental transition of societies;
- prepare students to take part in development and spatial planning initiatives (territorial diagnosis, local development, European project management, urban planning initiatives, etc.);
- identify the territorial consequences of planning policies and tools.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
An open attitude towards social and economic problems.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Theoretical lectures
- Regular classroom illustrated by concrete cases.
- Use of spatial information visualization tools (mapping, landscaping tools).
- Analysis of documents produced in the context of spatial planning, mobility and urban design projects.
- Field trips to illustrate the theoretical lessons with real-life cases analysed in real-life situations.
- Discussions in the field based on concrete cases illustrating the challenges of regional planning and its links with sustainable development.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
Theoretical and practical courses take place face-to-face at the Arlon Campus Environnement.
The field trips take place in Belgium or in a neighbouring country. The organisation of field days is subsidised by the ULiège, which enables certain expenses (transport, etc.) to be partially or fully covered. Participation in field days is compulsory.
