Teaching in the first semester, review in January
Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Main themes of the course: tectonic landscapes and features, from the continental to the local (fault) scale; measuring present-day crustal motions; rivers and tectonics; thermochronology; geomorphometry; earthquakes (distribution, mechanism, measure, effects, paleoseismology, prediction); volcanoes (tectonic setting, products, volcanic geomorphology).
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course provides the student with all tools required to characterize the tectonic and volcanic landscapes, to understand the ties between volcanoes and tectonics, to collect and analyze geomorphic indicators of the tectonic activity. In brief, it provides the basic knowledge for a correct understanding and assessment of the seismic and volcanic hazards.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic knowledge in mechanics, general geomorphology and geology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures. Practicals: structural geomorphology, based on the analysis of topographical maps and aerial photographs; elementary morphotectonic modelling; landscape morphometry; drawing and reading focal mechanisms. Field work: East Eifel volcanism: from the landscape to the deposits and back; morphotectonic mapping of active structures.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
2- or 3-hours lectures; 2-hours practicals in groups limited to 12 people. The course covers a whole week during the 2nd semester.
of green light: on-site, + scientific report; if other light, remote (LifeSize), + scientific report
Recommended or required readings
required: Lecture notes + PowerPoint files available online (MyULg, students' portal)
Any session :
- In-person
oral exam
- Remote
oral exam AND written work
- If evaluation in "hybrid"
preferred remote
Additional information:
Written examination in the first session (theory, possibly plus field work: 50%; practicals: 40%; + scientific paper presentation during the year: 10%) except of 3 or less students: oral; in case of failure, oral examination in the 2nd session.
Questions are open, relating to knowledge and analysis of the presented topics and often referring explicitly to pre-requisites in a will of integrated knowledge.
If sanitary disorder persists until the examination date, remote oral examination (Lifesize)
