Learning unit contents
The final piece of work for the Masters in law consists of three parts:
- A piece of written work;
- An internship;
- A public oral presentation in a simulated professional situation.
Written work or participation in a seminar
The piece of written work consists of a piece of research and analysis similar to a doctoral thesis, of around 25 pages, under the supervision of a tutor.
Internship
The internship is an actual professional experience which should lead the student to working on cases, carrying out tasks and drafting legal documents. It cannot be limited to an observational internship.
Oral test
The oral presentation consist of:
- Conclusions (defence speech in a trial simulation)
- A draft law (Parliamentary debate);
- A legal analysis (corporate lawyer);
- Written work before external persons in line with the form of a seminar.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Written work or participation in a seminar
Through the written work, the student should demonstrate their ability to personally analyse legal questions which they have not come across in class, or to delve further into legal issues than what has been covered in class. They must demonstrate their ability to learn (research information, use documentary research), understand (draft a document, carry out critical analysis) and present (make an ordered, analytical and critical presentation).
Internship
The internship is an actual professional experience which should lead the student to working on cases, carrying out tasks and drafting legal documents.
Oral test
The aim of the oral presentation is to ensure students address the issue of speaking in public and raise their awareness of the importance of oral communication, regardless of the legal profession they intend to follow.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Students are eligible to begin the final piece of work on the condition that:
- They have obtained their Bachelor's degree;
- They have acquired at least 45 credits in the Masters programme, assuming that their annual programme enables them to continue towards achieving their degree (referred to as a "diplômable" student);
- They have followed seminars on preparation of the final dissertation (DROI1274/2).
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Written work or participation in a seminar
Choosing the subject is part of the dissertation exercise. In principle, the student must research the subject of their work themselves, following the advice of their academic tutor.
The tutor must approve the subject proposed by the student. The tutor may refuse a subject that they believe to be without value, or which is beyond their area of expertise.
No later than 30 November, the student must have begun the process of submitting their dissertation on-line at www.matheo.uliege.be by completing the "Abstract" section with a brief, provisional description of the subject of their dissertation, approved by the academic tutor.
Generally, the student must consult their tutor at decisive stages of drafting their dissertation.
Internship
The internship takes place throughout the academic year and no later than the end of June 2024, with exceptions being granted by the Internship and Dissertation Committee in exceptional circumstances.
The student must perform at least 120 hours of work. In principle, this work should take place where the internship takes place, in line with the practical guidelines established by the tutors and with the intern's agreement. The intern will comply with measures and provisions taken by the host organisation, and the hours set out by them may, if necessary, take place partly through remote working. The internship supervisor will ensure the intern has some form of induction to give them an overview of the professional world in which they work. Unless the academic tutor grants an exception due to the specific nature of the internship, the intern must carry out written services on a minimum of five cases. The academic tutor may set requirements as to the content of the internship.
At the end of the internship, the student must draft an internship report (+/- 10 pages), respecting the guidelines set in the Masters dissertation regulations and, where appropriate, by their academic tutor. The internship supervisor does not provide a grade. They provide their observations, in terms of the work the student undertook, and their ability to adapt and integrate into the workplace, on the basis of an evaluation grid.
Oral test
The presentation is, in principle, open to the public, before an evaluation jury.
The public oral sessions are organised throughout the academic year. In line with Article 41§2 of the general exam regulations, the oral exam is only organised once in the academic year. The grade obtained in the exam is assumed to be connected to each of the exam sessions.
With the exception of the public defence of the written work, the preparation for the oral exam does not require the student to submit another piece of written work. The oral exam is carried out and prepared by the student on the basis of a case which is submitted to them, in principle, at least two weeks in advance, and consists of:
- Either conclusions to be defended and one or more procedural items (conclusions of the prosecution, court ruling);
- Or the reference of the draft law which is the subject of debate;
- Or a summary note of the analysis to be presented by the corporate lawyer and one or more other items (contracts, letters, etc.).

Additional information:
The overall grade for the dissertation is weighted as follows:
- Written work: 12/20e
- Internship : 5/20e
- Oral presentation 3/20e
The written work is the pinnacle of the student's university career, in which they demonstrate the acquisition of skills involved in reflection, research and writing, which are indispensable to any lawyer. In the event of serious inadequacy (a grade of 7 or less) in the written work, the overall grade for the dissertation cannot be higher than 9.
A failing grade, even a serious one, in the oral presentation cannot lead to an overall failing grade if the other parts have been passed.
