Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Learning unit contents

After a brief introduction explaining the reasons for a course of communication in the biomedical field, the main forms of oral ("flash" presentation, "long" presentation), written (article, thesis) and mixed (poster) scientific communication are discussed in details. Both the structure and content of each form of communication are discussed in depth. A particular attention is paid to the advices as well as to the means used to achieve effective, precise and structured written and oral communication that meets international standards.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, students must be able to

  • to produce a precise and structured powerpoint support for an oral presentation and to present this latter in English
  • to create, on the basis of results extracted from a scientific article, a poster and to defend this latter in English

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

  • The students must know how to use the basic functions of Word or a related software and be able to write a structured text in English.
  • The student must know how to use the basic functions of PowerPoint or a related software.
  • The student must have followed a prior scientific schoolarship in order to understand the results as well as the basic techniques used in a scientific article published in the last few years (after 2018).
  • The student must have taken English courses beforehand.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

-Théorical: ex-cathedra course in English (mainly)

-Practical: students are invited to

  • perform in English, on the basis of a scientific article, a poster and defend this latter.
  • create a "flash" oral presentation in English and present this latter in front of the other students. The goal is to gain some experience in both types of presentation (oral and written). During these activities, the students are, of course, supervised and advised.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
