Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
The course is divided into 6 sessions. Four of them include theoretical courses, 1 of them is more interactive and involves a Q&A session and the last one is focused on a lecture gieven by a specialist in wastewater plant design and optimization.
The four theoretical sessions are declined as follow :
Session 1 : introduction and overview about wastewater engineering
Session 2 : basic processes for wastewater treatment
Session 3 : advanced processes for wastewater treatment and valorization
Session 4 : management of microbial communities involved in wastewater treatment
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The main target of the course is to provide the students with a torough knowledge about the design of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) that are actually in use for processing the organic load of wastewater. Through the introduction of basic engineering principles and the presentation of new technologies, the students will also be faced with the actual challenges related to sustainable development and its profound impact on the conception of future WWTPs. Indeed, next-generation WWTPs will be more focused on the valorization of the organic load (i.e. through the utilization of membrane technologies, but also advanced microbial technologies, such as anaerobic communities or photosynthetic microbes).
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Basic knowledge in physics chemistry and mathematics, as well as more specific knowledge in microbiology and molecular biology
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Some specific scientific papers about new microbial technologies for wastewater treatment will also be supplied on purpose (can be different from a year to another)
Written examination (100%)
Work placement(s)
Real-life examples of wastewater treatment plants design will be presented.
Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
As mentionned before, the last session will be involving a seminar given by an external teacher. Attending to the seminar is mandatory.
