Learning unit contents
Students will be grouped in 2 or 3 randomly according to the number of people enrolled in the course and each small group will be freely invited to choose an article published during the last 3 years in Clinical Chemistry, Clinica Chimica Acta or Clinial Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine which are the reference journals in the field of clinical chemistry. The choice will be primarily based on a pedagogical objectives and must be validated by the Prof. Cavalier. If the article is not in open access, students may request a copy from Prof. Cavalier. Themes will focus mainly on the validation of new methods, discovery of new biomarkers, presentation of new assay methods, analytical interferences or any other article related to the pre- and post-analytical phases. Reviews will be excluded, as well as Letters to the Editor.
After validation, each group will be asked to make a presentation in English of maximum 15 minutes to the whole class. This presentation should be structured according to the article but should also include a short pathophysiological introduction (if appropriate).
For each group presenting an article, one group will be chosen (in advance) as chair-wo-men. Each chair-wo-men will be required to ask a relevant question in English to the presenters of the paper, who will also be required to answer in English. Chair-wo-men are allowed to read the paper they are chairing in advance to prepare questions. However, they will have to agree not to ask the same question to the speakers. The whole class will also be encouraged to ask a question.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The objective of this course is multiple. First of all, students will have to read and understand a scientific article, but also present it in a simple and educational way in English. It is not always easy to ask a question in English when attending a congress or conference. It is also sometimes difficult to answer the questions asked. The aim of adding chair-wo-men will be to make the Q&A part dynamic, but also to "force" students to ask - and answer - a question in English. A short questionnaire on the presentations will be given to the whole class at the end of each session. This is also intended to stimulate listening by the whole class. Secondly, the students preparing (and chairing) the paper will most likely be asked to go beyond the paper to contextualise it in the wider context of clinical chemistry, and the students in the class will be given a good insight into recent developments in clinical chemistry and the work of biomedical scientists in this area. Finally, the speakers will have to make a PowerPoint presentation that corresponds to what is expected at a congress or a conference (no overload, avoid too many effects, accessible colours,...)
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Biochemistry, physiology, physiopathology, principles of clinical chemistry, scientific English
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Flipped classroom, participatory teaching
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Face-to-face course
Recommended or required readings
PDFs of presentations will be provided to students in the class
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( multiple-choice questionnaire ) AND oral exam
Written work / report
Continuous assessment
Out-of-session test(s)
Additional information:
This course will not be subject to an in-session certificate examination.
The overall grade will be made up of the presentation (pedagogy, overall quality) and the defence. Chair-wo-men will be penalized for refusing to participate and ask a question. A score will also be provided for the answers to the questions that will be asked via e-campus at the end of each session. Attendance at the sessions is therefore mandatory.
During the session, a "bonus" exam will be organised. This exam is not compulsory but students who wish to take it must register one week in advance. This non-penalising exam will cover the articles and concepts presented during the year.
