Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

The course "Application of molecular biology and genetics" will be devoted to the integrated practical application of the concepts seen in the General genetics and Molecular biology classes. This exercise will include the collection of biological material, the molecular analyze in the laboratory and the interpretation of results.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of this class, the student must have assimilated the theoretical bases of the most common techniques of molecular biology and genetics. He should also be able to understand and perform a series of techniques in the laboratory. He should be able to interpret the experimental results obtained during the practical course in the context of genetics.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Co-required BIOL2015-3 Molecular biology, BIOL2016-3 General genetics

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The collection of biological material will be done as part of a visit in the field. Molecular analyzes will include a theoretical part describing the main techniques which will then be applied in a practical session. The aim will be to extract and analyze nucleic acids. A last part will include analysis and interpretation of data.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face

Recommended or required readings

  • Molecular Biology of the Gene 7th ed. (Watson, Baker, Bell, Gann, Levine, Losik), Pearson International, 2014
  • Molecular Biology 3d ed. (Clark and Pazdernik), APCell press, 2018

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

written exam ( open-ended questions )

Written work / report

Continuous assessment

Additional information:

Attendance at practical lab work is compulsory!

People with a sickness certificate (e.g., in quarantine) will have to do a replacement activity. This replacement activity has to be done during the teaching period and before the first exam sesssion .

Students who do not participate in practical lab work / do not perform their replacement activity can not take the exam at the first session AND the second session.

The evaluation of the practical lab part will be composed of notes resulting from the continuous evaluation carried out during the laboratories (through reports and / or interrogations and / or questions before, during and after the labs) and of a question asked during the exam session.

The evaluation of the other parts will be done through a written open book evaluation associated to a continuous assessement based on directed work sessions.

The final grade will be established as the average between the different parts. Partial waivers based on the first session will be granted for the second session for each part which scores 10/20 or more. These exemptions are valid only within the same academic year.
