Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Part 1 : Introduction
Part 2 : Modelling systems at the macro- and meso-scale
Part 3 : Complex systems and systems biology
Part 4: Modelling systems at the microscale
Fields of application that will be covered:
1.Chemical engineering: process optimization, separation, intensification, scale-up
2.Bioprocess engineering: cell culture, product formation (recombinant protein, plasmid DNA, metabolites...)
3.Genetic engineering: metabolic engineering, systems and synthetic biology
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
This course will be focused on the analysis of different physical and biological systems of importance in bioengineering. Each of the systems will be analyzed and translated in terms of mathematical equations (either algebraic or ordinary differential equations), and simulated (Python will be used as a reference numerical tool). The physical systems that will be covered include the operations in stirred tank reactor (mixing, microbial bioprocesses, cell cultures), as well as some downstream processing operations (more precisely liquid-liquid and solid-liquid operations). The biological that will be covered include the growth of cell populations and the dynamics of gene circuits. The notion of complex systems will also be covered based on network and dynamics analyses.
