Learning unit contents
The internship is an individual project that needs to be realised in an industrial environment, in Belgium or abroad. it is generally considered to be the equivalent of 1 month full-time work. The subject is typically proposed by a company and approved by a promotor, who is a member of the academic or permanent scientific staff.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The goal of the internship is to introduce the students for the industrial world by exposing them to a professional environment focusing on specific technologies. The students must observe how projects are typically realised in industry, using knowledge and aptitude, both theoretical and practical. The observed work can be composed of a preliminary study, a subsequent realisation or an evaluation.
This course contributes to the learning outcomes V.1&2, VI.1, VII.2&3 of the MSc in biomedical engineering.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
In a company or independent research center.
Recommended or required readings
Written work / report
Additional information:
The evaluation is based on the report provided by the student. There are no formal guidelines on the length of the report, however, it is expected that around 10 pages are required to address the following elements: a description of the context, the compnay (including a short description of their financial situation), the problem (or design specifications), the methodology followed in the company and a conclusion (perspectives).
The score of the internship is based on the written report and a private defense. It consists of an oral presentation, a Q&A and is followed by a deliberation. The final score takes into account the quality of the written report and oral presentation, the relevance of the answers to the questions, as well as the advise from the industrial sponsor.
Work placement(s)
Professors propose internship subjects for which they accept the academic promotorship. These subjects are coming from the companies. Students can also propose a subject themselves. The students should decide as early as possible on the subject, ideally the end of the preceding academic year if they want to perform the internship during the summer holidays. The internship will last for at least 20 working days, without taking into account the time to write or defend the report. The internship can start as soon as the students is registered in the program, e.g. during the summer holidays. The internship is organised comform to the terms of an internship convention signed by all the parties involved.
