Learning unit contents
This 2-credit course complements the course "Biotechnical Aspects of Livestock Systems" and focuses on milk production by dairy cows. It is intended to specialize students in the field of dairy cow nutrition, mainly in temperate regions.
The course is made up of 2 different parts :
1. The ration formulation for the the dairy herd
2. The metabolic nutritional diseases in dairy cow
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
The course aims at training you to use your knowledge and undertsanding to formulate a balanced ration for the dairy herd following different goals :Optimize the use of feeds produced on the farm
- The qualitative and quantitative milk production
- The operation of the ruminant, including the metabolic nutritional diseases
The second objective is to study the main metabolic diseases of nutritional origin in dairy cows.
This course contributes to the acquisition of the following skills:
1. Identify relevant qualitative and quantitative information related to an agronomic process
2. Interpreting information related to an agronomic process in order to identify the main elements

The evaluation will be based on a discussion of the ration proposed at the end of the course and the consequences on metabolic diseases in dairy cows.

Organisational remarks and main changes to the course
The written reports must be sent via email at latest on the last day of the lecturer period in December of the academic year. Late reports will not be considered and an absence mark will automatically be given.
