Learning unit contents
The first part of the course is dedicated to an introduction to information literacy by A. Anceau. Some documentary tools useful to geographers are presented. Among these, the course particularly addresses the discovery tool of the University libraries, bibliographic databases Scopus, GEOREF, International Geographical Bibliography, as well as some other specific resources. A part of the course is devoted to the research of cartographic documents (GEOKATALOG, regional, national, international cartographic websites). The correct writing of bibliographical references is also dealt with.
The second part of the course focuses on the achievement of a written report and an oral presentation. This part will take two forms.
- Either the student has chosen the Environmental Science and Management module in BAC 3, and does not attend the Additional undergraduated final work (GEOG0056) course (5 ECTS). In this case, he will work on a subject proposed by the Department of Environmental Science and Management or on a subject proposed by the Department of Geography. The bachelor thesis will be based on the realization of a written and oral work showing his/her understanding of a theme not seen in the courses through a bibliographical research, on a theme in relation to the topics seen or that his knowledge allows him to master. The aim is to carry out a bibliographical synthesis of the scientific literature in about 15 pages (7,000 to 10,000 words), written in correct French, on a research question. This synthesis will be based on a correctly referenced and cited bibliography, which must contain at least five recent scientific articles on the subject dealt with and, as far as possible, one or more reference works. The written report will adopt the standard structure of a scientific report, i.e. an introduction (the question asked placed in its context), the objectives of the research, the methodologies used (information literacy strategy), the results obtained, a critical discussion (decisive for the added value of the bachelor thesis), a conclusion (perspectives of the research).
- Either the student attends the Complements of Geography module in BAC3 and thus the complementary course entitled Additional undergraduated final work (5 ECTS). In this case, the student must refer to this course to know the complete content of the teaching unit.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
Exploring a sophisticated question of geography.
To report on this research in front of an informed audience.
Teaching students to develop information literacy skills and to correctly write bibliographic references.
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Courses related to the chosen topic.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The student, under the supervision of a supervisor, performs a bibliographical synthesis on a specific geographical question that he/she is able of mastering given his/her achievement in Bachelor degree.
The student writes a structured and documented report on his/her research.
An oral presentation of the work is to be organized in front of three reviewers (professors or scientists of the Geography Department).
If the student does not attend the Additional undergraduated final work (GEOG0056) course (5 ECTS), the oral presentation lasts 10 minutes; if the student attends this course, the oral presentation lasts 15 minutes.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Supervised self-learning.
Introduction to information literacy is held in a computer room of the University.
Recommended or required readings
A tutorial involving information literacy is at the student's disposal.
The final mark consists of two elements. Assessment directly related to the teaching of A. Anceau represents 20% of the 5 credits of the Undergraduated final work course.
