Units courses prerequisite and corequisite

Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program

Learning unit contents

Continuous media and stress tensors. Kinematics of continuous media (Eulerian and Lagrangian descriptions, deformations). Thermomechanics of continuous media : conservation of mass, of linear and angular momentum, of energy, constitutive equations. Linear elasticity. Perfect fluid. Viscous fluid. Problems : flows round obstacles, thermo-convection, waves in continuous media, instabilities and self-organization, heat and momentum diffusion,...

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

At the end of the course, the student will know and understand the fundamental laws of irreversible thermodynamics and will be able to use them in elementary applications.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Students are assumed to be familiar with Newtonian Mechanics of particles and of systems of particles.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The theoretical part of the course is presented as lectures (30h). In case of a small audience, lectures are replaced by a tutorship that consists in discussions between the sudents and the instructor. Exercices are also proposed to solve problems (10h).

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Face-to-face course

Additional information:

Face-to-face teaching (except in the case of problems related to the pandemic).
