Learning unit contents
Broad view of German history since 1806 with special attention given to political and institutional history and to historiographical debates. In 2023-24, the course will focus on the Kaiserreich 1871-1918.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
German history of the Kaiserreich has known a new historiographic interest in the last years. Old questions about an incomplete nation-state have been reread through the lense of transnational and colonial history.
The course has two major issues: the study of a national history leading to a more comparative approach of European history in connection with the other courses and the reflection of the practice of writing history through the great historiographical debates in Germany.
