In an increasingly globalised world, the practice of Human Resource Management (HRM) extends beyond national borders. This course is designed to equip students with the tools and knowledge needed to manage a diverse workforce in multiple international settings.

Students will explore the complexities of International HRM, including the challenges and opportunities that organisations face when expanding and operating across differing cultural, legal, and economic landscapes. The course covers a wide range of topics including cross-cultural management, global talent acquisition and retention, international labor laws and ethics, global compensation and benefits, and the role of HR in international mergers and acquisitions.

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the role and significance of International HRM in today's global business environment.
  • Develop competencies in managing a multicultural workforce and fostering inclusivity.
  • Acquire knowledge of international recruitment, selection, and compensation strategies
  • Understand the complexities of HR decisions in an international context.

The core text for the course is:

Dowling, P., Festing, M., & Engle, A. (2023). International Human Resource Management (8th Edition). Cengage Learning EMEA.

It is recommended but not mandatory to buy the textbook. Students should be able to pass the course by relying on the weekly PowerPoint slides and by actively participating in class.

Your knowledge about this course will be tested and evaluated via two separate assessments, one group assessment and one individual assessment. 

Assessment #1: Field Project (40% of total marks)

The aim of the group field project is to give the opportunity of applying theory to reality and, in particular, to real organisations. Each group has analyse an organisation's HR strategy from an international HRM point of view, thereby using the concepts and the models that are presented during the course. More information on the field project will be provided during the first lecture.

Assessment #2: Case study with multiple choice exam (60% of total marks)

In this assessment, students will be required to analyse a case study and respond to a set of multiple-choice questions. The case study will focus on a current issue in sustainable HRM like (for example) diversity, digitalization, or green HRM initiatives. The multiple-choice questions will assess your theoretical understanding of key concepts, theories and models, as well as your ability to identify and analyse critical issues or challenges pertinent to sustainable HRM.
