Schedule
Units courses prerequisite and corequisite
Prerequisite or corequisite units are presented within each program
Learning unit contents
Description of the teaching unit:
General introduction to the use of system analysis to study, understand and manage an environmental problem
Table of contents:
System concept and modelling approach. The different model representation formalisms: state space, input/output, response to typical sollicitations. Methodology for the development of a model: conceptuel model and quantitative model. Elements of stability, resilience, control and simulation. Application to an example of river basin management in the context of a flood risk. The course is built on a "red line" exercise dealing with the assessment of a sustainable tourism project.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course the student is able to analyze a complex environmental problem in terms
of systems and to apply the proposed methodology to an other complex situation
Prerequisite knowledge and skills
Mathematics fundamentals (functions, derivatives, integrals, fundamentals of differential equations)
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course is made of theoretical lectures with some exercises realized by groups of 3 to 4 students. The "red line" exercise is realized also in groups with support from the professor.
Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)
Theoretical lectures and exercises in face-to-face mode
Recommended or required readings
Copy of the Power Point presentations available
Exam(s) in session
Any session
- In-person
written exam ( open-ended questions )
Additional information:
The evaluation is written without class notes. It evaluates the capability of the students to apply the methodology to an other environmental problem. It also checks if the fundamental elements of systems analysis are well understood by the students
