Learning unit contents
This course deals with electrical measurement techniques / methods / devices that are required to make successful measurements of low level voltages or currents, as may happen e.g. using high sensitivity sensors. A particular attention is paid to carrying out measurements in a non-ideal environment as is often encountered in industrial, biomedical or power applications. The course ils illustrated by various experiments during the theoretical lectures and the students will practice the concepts learned during laboratory sessions organised at the end of the quadrimester.
Interference problems : normal mode and common-mode voltages, ground loops, bridge circuits. Connection theory: earthing, guarding and shielding. Advanced measurement circuits using operational amplifiers and instrumentation amplifiers. Noise and noise rejection. Low voltage measurements and applications. Low current measurements and applications. Practical limitations of digital multimeters and data acquisition systems. Electrical characterisation of materials used in electrical engineering : conducting, semiconducting, dielectric and insulating materials. High voltage measurements. Magnetic measurement methods.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of the course, students will be able to:
- demonstrate a knowledge and understanding of theoretical and practical considerations involved in precision electrical measurements
- understand how various materials are used in electrical engineering and how to characterise them;
- demonstrate practical skills as well as the ability to carry out successful measurements of low-level signals
- minimize interference phenomena observed in high-sensitivity electrical measurements.

Practical courses involve mandatory laboratory experiments : electrometer, lock-in amplifier, instrumentation amplifier, conditioning circuits for sensors

Theoretical part (30 hours) : 1st quadrimester. Face-to-face.
Practical courses (20 hours, including preparation) : schedule to be discussed, depending on the measurement lab vacancies. Practical course include 3 half-days in the laboratory. These laboratory sessions are mandatory.
