Learning unit contents

Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication

This course is devoted to the study of the principal techniques used to search for mathematical documentation (use of encyclopaedias, of search engines, of bibliographical databases, of catalogs of libraries) and to a training to the writing and the encoding in LaTeX of mathematical texts and their bibliographies. We will emphasize how to cite references in order to avoid plagiarism.

Part 2: Integrated project

This is an independent learning of a new mathematical subject, based on a bibliographic research on a theme. A basic reference (article, book or part of a book) may or may not be proposed as a starting point for the work.

Learning outcomes of the learning unit

Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication

At the end of the course, the students should be able to find by themselves a list of references on a specific mathematical subject and to quickly locate the works quoted in this list in paper or electronic form. They should also be able to write mathematical texts and bibliographies.

Part 2: Integrated project

At the end of the course, the student will have worked on his own to read and understand the references he has selected. The student will have learned how to do a bibliographic research on a mathematical subject and to write a mathematical document in LaTeX. The student's understanding of his or her subject will be sufficient to allow him or her to present the content clearly and convincingly during a 40-minute oral presentation. He or she should be able to present a proof on the board, as well as the general context in which it fits using Beamer support.

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

Part 2: Integrated project

Prerequisite
MATH0482-3 - Probabilité et statistique
MATH0248-1 - Géométrie
Corequisite
MATH0499-1 - Théorie des graphes
MATH0246-2 - Structures algébriques

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication

The theoretical part of the course is teached by means of Powerpoint presentations. During the exercises sessions, the students are trained to search for documentation and to localize books in the library. They are also trained to write and encode in LaTeX mathematical texts and bibliographic notices.

Part 2: Integrated project

A list of topics with a brief description of the objective of the project will be made available to students at the beginning of the academic year. Each topic will be proposed by a promoter.

The level of difficulty of the proposed topics will be taylored so that they are accessible to 3rd year bachelor students in mathematical sciences of the ULiège.

The student must make a first appointment with the promoter before October 30th. During this meeting, each promoter will specify what is expected from the student for the realization of the project. Except in exceptional circumstances, if the student has not met the promoter before October 30th, the project will not be accepted in the first session. It may be accepted in the second session if the student has met the promoter before June 30th.

Then, the student will have to work independently during the whole year (the two quarters) but will be able to make an appointment with his/her promoter on a regular basis in order to discuss his/her possible mathematical difficulties.

Mode of delivery (face to face, distance learning, hybrid learning)

Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication

Face-to-face course

Part 2: Integrated project

Blended learning

Additional information:

The meetings with the promoter can take place in person or virtually, at the best convenience of the student and the promoter.

Recommended or required readings

Part 1: Techniques of documentation and communication

Lecture notes will be distributed to the students during the course.

written exam ( open-ended questions )

Part 2: Integrated project

Exam(s) in session

Any session

- In-person

oral exam

Written work / report

Additional information:

Evaluation of the students achievements will be based on an oral presentation ofthe chosen topic in French or in English. This will be accompagnied by a written version encoded in LaTeX.

The presentation will last approximately 40 minutes. It will be performed in front of the coordinators and the promoter and any exterior person who may wish to attend. The student must combine the use of beamer and the blackboard. In particular, the presentation will include one proof without notes on the blackboard. If the need arises, the student may use exterior elements (projections, softwares, artefacts) for illustrative purposes.

The LaTeX document presents the subject studied in a maximum of 15 pages of content (excluding the cover page, table of contents and bibliography). It must include a bibliography written with BibLaTeX. The LaTeX file will need to compile on the computers of the B37 computer room.

The presentation may be made before or during the examination session, the date being agreed with the two coordinators and the promoter. The written work must be sent by email to these three people at least one week before the presentation. The written work may be re-read by the promoter no more than once, and no more than one repetition of your presentation may be organized with him.

The grade will be attributed by the coordinators and the promoter. The final grade will be attributed in equal parts with respect to the January exam of partim 1, the oral presentation and the LaTeX document.
