Learning unit contents
This course is to study in-depth the sustainable building techniques in terms of principles. The course deals with the material elements of construction and the process in parallel with the basic concepts of the different building materials and their implementation. The course is structured in 3 parts - Design and materials, Chronology of construction, and constructive nodes - which are treated in a logical sequence that helps the mutual understanding of the subject and which thus allows the control of their interdependence.

3. Principles of sustainable building construction techniques
The theoretical part of the course introduces the technical criteria, the constructive and material concepts of sustainable architecture. The concepts discussed are applied during the realization of various small practical exercises which also make it possible to favor a work of personal research on the part of the student. Personal reading of technical references is essential and is an ability that the student must develop himself. Particular importance is given to the processing of constructive nodes in order to jointly meet the requirements of structural strength, insulation, waterproofness, and aesthetics of the construction.
The course will highlight the concept of passive construction, directly related to future building energy regulations. The exercises carried out must also be based on the criteria imposed by this new approach.
Learning outcomes of the learning unit
At the end of this course the student should be able to:
- Observe and draw a building construction.
- Know the systems and methods for a supporting structure and an envelope.
- Know the main building materials and their technical implementation.
- Apply and propose logic, structural, measured-based construction types (constructive geometries, power transmission, stability, elementary physical envelopes)
- Make an inventory of References and understand the common construction systems,
- Compare: identify and differentiate solutions
- Define and name: recognize and know the parts of a building construction
- Proportion: materialize and order the different parts of a structure,
- Projecting: compose and share solutions.
- Create and design a building to constructive scales (modules, proportions, sizing, and thickness).
- Initiate self-learning and knowledge management based on its knowledge and access to appropriate sources of

Exam for the theoretical part: 40% of the overall grade
Overall evaluation of the practical work: 60%
Students who have not completed all the mandatory activities may not be admitted to the exam (if an exam is organized). The absence of mandatory elements does not allow a quantified evaluation of the student's work. An "A" grade is therefore awarded in this case (unless there is a special justification examined fairly by the teacher and accepted by him).
